Parts of Braces

Conventional metal braces and ceramic braces are both made of the same moving parts that include brackets, elastics and more. Even though each individual part is small, each part of your braces is very important for bringing the teeth into proper alignment. Your Orland Park orthodontist has been providing high-quality braces at an affordable cost for more than 25 years. Dr. Sonneveld and his experienced staff work with patients of all ages to ensure you get the best orthodontic care and the most affordable braces possible. Our doctors want to make sure you to understand the different types of braces and Invisalign treatment, from the inside out. Here’s how the parts become the braces that will lead to your dazzling new smile.

The main wires, or archwires, are thin, strong and flexible wires that are threaded through each bracket on the top and bottom teeth. When pressure is applied to the archwires, the teeth are gently guided into their ideal position.

The bands on your Orland Park braces are designed to anchor the archwire and the rest of the braces system to your mouth. A band is a ring made of metal that is custom-fitted to your molars. Bands are attached to the molars using a special adhesive that contains fluoride to help prevent tooth decalcification.

The brackets hold the archwire against each tooth. The archwire fits into a slot in the bracket. Brackets also come with built-in hooks to hold the ligature ties in place.

Coil Spring

The coil spring is a small part that is fitted over the archwire and between the brackets. This part of your braces helps control tooth movement.

Ligature Ties

Ligature ties, often called O-Rings or elastics, are small rubber rings designed with the purpose of attaching the archwire of the brackets. O-Rings come in a wide variety of fun colors, allowing patients wearing braces to have some fun while they’re improving their smiles.

Hooks are small attachments on the brackets used to attach elastics (rubber bands).
