Orthodontic Emergencies: When and How to Seek Help

Orthodontic Emergencies: When and How to Seek Help

Orthodontic treatment is a significant investment in your smile, but sometimes, unexpected issues can arise. Whether you have traditional braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances, knowing how to handle emergencies can make all the difference in your comfort and the success of your treatment.

At Sonneveld Orthodontics, we understand that orthodontic emergencies can be stressful. This guide will help you identify true emergencies, manage minor issues at home, and understand when to contact our team for expert assistance.

What Qualifies as an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every discomfort is an emergency, but some situations require immediate attention to prevent injury or disruption to your treatment. Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories: those that can be managed at home until your next appointment and those that need prompt professional intervention.

Serious emergencies include severe pain unrelieved by over-the-counter medication, oral trauma resulting in bleeding or swelling, or appliances causing tissue injury. True emergencies are rare, but ignoring them can lead to complications or prolonged treatment. If you’re unsure, reach out to our office for guidance.

Common Orthodontic Issues and At-Home Care

Broken Brackets or Bands

Broken brackets or bands are among the most common orthodontic issues. While not always urgent, a loose bracket can delay your progress if left untreated for extended periods of time. If a bracket detaches but remains on the wire, gently slide it back to its proper position and secure it with orthodontic wax. Avoid eating sticky or hard foods until it’s repaired.

If a band comes off, save it and bring it to your next appointment.

Protruding or Poking Wires

Protruding wires can irritate the cheeks and gums, causing discomfort or even small sores. If a wire is poking you, try to gently push it flat against your tooth using a clean pencil eraser or the back of a spoon. Cover the end with orthodontic wax for temporary relief. Then contact Sonneveld Orthodontics for an appointment to clip the long wire.

Loose or Lost Ligatures

Ligatures are the small rubber bands or wires that hold the archwire to the brackets. If one comes loose, you can often reposition it with sterilized tweezers. If it falls off completely, do not attempt to replace it yourself. Missing ligatures can slow your treatment.

Instead, let us know, and we’ll advise you on the next steps.

Soreness and Pain Management

Mild discomfort is expected after adjustments, but severe or persistent pain is not. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate soreness. Rinsing with a warm saltwater solution also soothes irritated tissues.

If pain becomes severe or does not improve within a few days, please contact our office to rule out any potential complications.

Swallowed or Inhaled Appliance Parts

It’s rare, but if you accidentally swallow a piece of your braces or other appliance, remain calm. Most small parts pass through the digestive system without harm. However, if you experience difficulty breathing or persistent coughing, seek immediate medical attention and notify our office as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I wait until my next scheduled appointment to fix a broken bracket?
It depends on the severity and location of the break. If the bracket is not causing pain or risking further damage, it may be safe to wait. However, always call our office to confirm the best course of action.
  • Is it normal for braces to hurt after an adjustment?
Mild discomfort is typical for a few days after adjustments, but severe pain is not. If your pain is intense or lingers, please contact us for further evaluation.

The Importance of Timely Intervention

Promptly addressing orthodontic emergencies can prevent further damage, reduce discomfort, and keep your treatment on track. Delayed care can prolong treatment times and increase the risk of complications. Patients who seek timely care for emergencies often have a significantly lower risk of extended treatment duration.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

While some emergencies are unavoidable, you can minimize risks by following these tips:

  • Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage appliances.
  • Wear mouthguards during sports.
  • Adhere to all care instructions provided by your orthodontist.
