Orthodontic

Emergencies

Most orthodontic issues are not life-threatening, but some situations need prompt attention from our orthodontic team. If you experience severe pain, injury to the face or teeth, or damage to your braces or appliance that you cannot resolve at home, contact our office as soon as possible.

For any trauma involving heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness, or suspected broken bones, call 911 or visit the emergency room first, and then reach out to us for follow-up orthodontic care.

Common orthodontic emergencies include:

  • Loose or broken brackets: Brackets that detach from the tooth or slide on the wire can irritate your cheeks and delay treatment.
  • Poking or broken wires: A sharp wire can irritate or cut the cheeks, lips, or tongue and should be addressed quickly.
  • Loose bands or appliances: Bands around molars, expanders, or other appliances that come loose may affect how your teeth move.
  • Lost separators (spacers): If a spacer falls out before your next appointment, it may need to be replaced.
  • Trauma to teeth or mouth: Any direct injury to the teeth, lips, or jaw should be evaluated by a dentist or physician first, then by our orthodontist.
  • Severe pain or swelling: Significant discomfort, swelling, or signs of infection require prompt professional evaluation.

At-Home

Solutions

Many minor issues related to an orthodontic emergency can be stabilized at home until you can visit our Orland Park office. These temporary solutions are designed to keep you comfortable and protect your teeth and appliances, but you should still contact us to determine whether an in-office visit is needed.

If a wire is poking your cheek or gums, try gently pushing it back into place with the eraser end of a pencil or a clean cotton swab. If that does not work, cover the irritating area with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum. Never cut a wire on your own unless instructed by our team, as this can create additional sharp edges or cause you to swallow a small piece of metal.

For loose brackets or bands, leave them in place if possible and cover any rough edges with orthodontic wax. If a bracket slides on the wire, you can carefully move it back toward the center of the tooth with clean fingers or tweezers, then secure it with wax. Keep any pieces that come off, and bring them with you to your appointment.

Mild soreness or tenderness after an adjustment is normal and usually improves within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers (as directed), soft foods, and warm saltwater rinses can help. If soreness becomes intense or does not improve, or if you suspect a true braces emergency, please call our office so we can evaluate your situation.
