At-Home

Solutions

Many orthodontic issues can be temporarily remedied at home. Here are a few at-home solutions to common issues:

If a braces wire is too long, broken, crooked, or loose, it can scrape up the inside of your mouth. Apply wax to the area or move the end of the wire with an eraser to reduce irritation until Dr. Sonneveld can fix the issue further. In extreme cases, cut the wire with a pair of nail clippers that have been sterilized in alcohol. If in doubt, please call our office – we are happy to answer your questions and help you make an emergency appointment.

Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can also help relieve jaw discomfort and soreness due to braces. You can also apply a heating pad or warm washcloth for orthodontic-related discomfort.

If you are experiencing extreme pain or discomfort from Invisalign, you may choose to remove the aligners until you can get in for an appointment. However, the longer they remain off your teeth, the longer it will take to realign them, so be sure to call Sonneveld Orthodontics right away to set up an appointment to address the issue.
