There are some instances that require immediate attention and a trip to your orthodontist. If you experience any of the following, call our office at (708) 403-2626 right away:

  • Extreme tooth or jaw pain
  • Loose wire
  • Loose bracket
  • Poking wire
  • Broken bracket

Many orthodontic issues can be temporarily remedied at home. Here are a few at-home solutions to common issues:

If a braces wire is too long, broken, crooked, or loose, it can scrape up the inside of your mouth. Apply wax to the area or move the end of the wire with an eraser to reduce irritation until Dr. Sonneveld can fix the issue further. In extreme cases, cut the wire with a pair of nail clippers that have been sterilized in alcohol. Always call our office to make an appointment.

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever can to relieve jaw discomfort and soreness due to braces. You can also apply a heating pad or warm washcloth.

If you are experiencing extreme pain or discomfort from Invisalign, you may choose to remove the aligners until you can get in for an appointment. However, the longer they remain off your teeth, the longer it will take to realign them—so be sure to call right away.
