Sports Drinks and Braces: pH Levels That Can Damage Your Smile

Practice season is here, and so is the cooler full of sports drinks. If you or your teen is wearing braces or Invisalign this year, that cooler deserves a second look. Not every bottle on the sideline treats your smile the same way.

The Hydration Habit

Bright bottles of sports drinks show up at every practice, game, and long summer afternoon. They taste good, they promise faster recovery, and they are everywhere from vending machines to team coolers. For most people, reaching for one is second nature and never gets a second thought.

For someone in orthodontic treatment, though, that habit carries a hidden cost. Many sports drinks sit in an acidic range that can soften tooth enamel, and braces or aligners create extra surfaces where that acid can linger.

Acid and Orthodontic Enamel

If you have ever worried about a drink “eating away” at your teeth, that worry is fair. It is not about willpower or discipline. Sports drinks are formulated to taste tart and refreshing, and that tartness comes from acid.

The American Association of Orthodontists notes that sugary, acidic drinks, including sports and energy drinks, can damage braces and aligners, which is why orthodontists bring this up so often. Brackets and wires give acid small ledges to collect on, and clear aligner trays can trap a drink against the enamel for the entire time they are worn. 

Knowing this is not about giving up your favorite drink forever. It is about understanding what is happening in your mouth so you can make an informed choice.

The pH Scale Basics

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 and measures how acidic or basic a liquid is. Pure water sits at a neutral 7.0. Anything lower is acidic, and the lower the number, the stronger the acid.

Dental researchers have identified a specific tipping point for enamel. Once a liquid’s pH drops to roughly 5.5, enamel begins to demineralize, a process where the acid pulls minerals like calcium straight out of the tooth surface. Research published in the National Library of Medicine confirms this 5.5 to 5.7 critical range for enamel decalcification. The same review measured a typical sports drink at a pH of only 3.3, well past that line.

Where Common Drinks Fall on the pH Scale

Understanding pH helps families see which drinks are most likely to weaken enamel — especially for teens with braces. Lower numbers mean higher acidity, and enamel begins to soften around pH 5.5, often called the “danger line.”

pH Levels of Popular Drinks

  • Cola: Its pH is ~2.5. This is a high‑risk zone and is extremely acidic and damaging to enamel.
  • Sports Drinks: Their pH is ~3.1–3.5. This is still highly acidic, falls well below the danger line, and can erode enamel around brackets.
  • Milk: Its pH is ~6.7. This is safer for enamel and comfortably above the danger line.
  • Tap Water: Its pH is 7.0. This is neutral and ideal for hydration during sports.
  • Alkaline Sport Water: Its pH is 9+. This is gentle on enamel and braces.

These ranges reflect NIH‑published erosion research and a 2025 systematic review of acidic beverages.

A Sports Drink Comparison

Most mainstream sports drinks cluster in a similarly acidic range, generally between pH 3.1 and 3.5, according to a 2025 review of acidic beverages and enamel. That same review found a leading sports drink produced enamel damage similar in severity to a well-known energy drink during lab testing. That means “sports” branding does not automatically mean gentler on enamel.

A smaller group of newer products breaks from that pattern. Some enhanced or alkaline waters marketed to athletes are formulated closer to a pH of 9, placing them on the opposite end of the scale from traditional sports drinks. That does not make every alternative safe by default, but it shows real variation exists on store shelves, and reading a label is worth the extra ten seconds.

Smarter Sipping Habits

None of this means practice season has to feel restrictive. Small habits make a real difference for anyone wearing braces or aligners. Drinking a sports drink quickly, rather than sipping it over an hour, limits how long acid sits against enamel.

A straw helps direct liquid further back in the mouth, away from the front brackets. Rinsing with plain water right after finishing a drink helps neutralize leftover acid before it lingers. Pairing an acidic drink with a meal, rather than drinking it alone, also helps, since saliva production during eating helps buffer acidity naturally.
