Braces or Clear Aligners? Which One Is Right For Me?

Braces are the classic treatment for misaligned teeth. They have been around for over 200 years, after all! And they have been doing a fantastic job all this time. However, there is a lot of hype in recent years about clear aligners, as well. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you or your child. Usually, your best bet is to determine what is most important to you, and go from there.

Aesthetics

If aesthetics are important to you, then you should understand how each option will look. Fortunately, even wire braces are becoming smaller and less noticeable. Plus, there are several options of braces. Clear braces are a popular choice for people who want their braces to be more discrete. These types of braces blend in and are less noticeable. On the other hand, clear aligners treatments consist of a series of clear, plastic trays, which are nearly invisible. Plus, they can be removed for brief periods when aesthetics demand it.

Care

Sometimes, complexity of care is the most important factor when considering orthodontic treatment. This includes dental care and care of whatever apparatus you choose. If the very best dental care is critical for you, clear aligners are a better choice. You will remove the trays when brushing and flossing, allowing you to clean your teeth more effectively. However, because clear aligners can be removed, the trays require more care than braces do. They need to be brushed daily as well as soaked and deep cleaned on occasion. With braces, you clean them as you brush your teeth, so there is no special care required.

Effectiveness

Both braces and clear aligners are highly effective treatment options. However, there are a few differences. With braces, you don’t require a high amount of compliance and will power. The brackets and wires are fixed to your teeth, so the option to remove them doesn’t exist. With clear aligners, the trays must be worn at least 22 hours a day to be effective. If you or your child is likely to take them off too frequently when they are hurting, annoying, or with frequent snacking, you won’t get the kind of results you are hoping for. Also, clear aligners have limitations depending on the severity of the issue.

It is important to consider your lifestyle, preferences, and abilities when you decide whether to get braces or clear aligners. Either way, you are worth it! Your smile is one of your most important features, and you deserve to feel great about it.
