Emergency Situations

Fortunately there are very few emergencies in regards to orthodontics. However, there may be times in which an appliance breaks or you are experiencing severe pain. In these instances, call our office right away. We can set up a time to fix the issue and give you advice on things you can do at home in the meantime.

At-Home Solutions

Many orthodontic issues can be remedied at home, which will save you a trip into our office. If a wire is too long, broken, crooked, bent, or loose, it can scrape and cut up the inside of your mouth. We advise that you apply wax to the area or move the end of the wire with an eraser to reduce irritation until Dr. Sonneveld can fix the issue further. In extreme cases, you may need to cut the wire on your own. This can be done with a pair of nail clippers that have been sterilized in alcohol. Even after doing this, you will need to call our office the next day to make an appointment.

Jaw discomfort is quite common with braces, especially initially and when the wires are tightened. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever can help to relieve the soreness, as will a heating pad or warm washcloth. Over time, usually a few days, the soreness will go away on its own.

If you are experiencing extreme pain or discomfort from our Tinley Park Invisalign treatment, you may choose to take the aligners out until you can get in for an appointment. You will want to get in right away, however, as the longer they remain off your teeth the longer it will take to realign them.
